ACL Reconstruction

ACL Reconstruction - Sports Injury Surgeon in Hobart

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears are one of the most common knee injuries. Athletes participating in high-demand sports such as netball, football, soccer and basketball are at greater risk of injuring their ACL. If you have injured your ACL, you may require surgery to regain full function of your knee. Mr Shalinder Sadiq performs 'all inside' ACL reconstruction, a minimally invasive surgical option with several advantages over traditional ACL reconstruction.

The 'all inside' technique

In traditional ACL reconstruction, two hamstring tendons, the semitendinosus and gracilis, are harvested from the back of the thigh and doubled to reconstruct the ligament. In the all-inside technique, only the semitendinosus is harvested and quadrupled, producing a thicker, sturdier graft, while the gracilis tendon is left intact. The femoral and tibial sockets are created using inside-out reaming with a specialised instrument called a flipcutter, rather than drilling full tunnels.

Advantages

Thicker, sturdier quadrupled graft from a single hamstring tendon

Avoids injury to the articular cartilage of the medial femoral condyle

Bone-preserving on the tibia, using a socket rather than a tunnel

Stronger cortical suspensory fixation in both the femur and tibia, without bulky screws or staples

Disadvantages

  • A technically demanding technique, requiring specialised training and instrumentation
RECOVERY

After your operation

Recovery from ACL reconstruction involves a structured physiotherapy program to restore strength, stability and range of motion. Because recovery and return-to-sport timelines vary from patient to patient, Mr Sadiq will discuss your individual recovery plan and goals with you as part of your consultation.

See our Recovery page for general guidance on preparing for surgery and what to expect after discharge, or call us on 03 6279 5798.

Is ACL reconstruction right for you?

Mr Sadiq would be happy to discuss the all-inside technique with you in detail and advise whether it's the right option for your injury, as part of your consultation.
