Custom Hip Replacement

Custom Hip Replacement - Hip Surgeon in Hobart

Total hip replacement is one of the most common surgical treatments for painful hip osteoarthritis. In hip osteoarthritis, the cartilage covering the femoral head and acetabulum gradually wears away, leading to direct bone-on-bone contact, pain, stiffness and a significant impact on quality of life and sleep.

Your hip is unique

The anatomy of the hip varies considerably from person to person, in bone shape, size, gender, physical activity and ethnicity. This makes your hip unlike anyone else's.
When carried out successfully, a total hip replacement removes this pain and significantly improves hip mobility. However, results can vary between patients, largely because individuals are anatomically different, which can make optimal implant placement and anatomical restoration more complex with a standard, off-the-shelf implant.

The INDIVIDUAL Hip®

Mr Shalinder Sadiq offers the INDIVIDUAL Hip®, manufactured by Symbios Orthopaedics, the same Swiss company (established 1989) behind the ORIGIN® Knee, and a world leader in patient-matched implants. The INDIVIDUAL Hip® femoral stem is designed and manufactured specifically to match your own femoral anatomy, aiming to restore your natural hip biomechanics and improve mobility and satisfaction after surgery.

How your INDIVIDUAL Hip® is made

Step 1 – A CT scan is taken of your hip

Step 2 – Your hip is analysed in 3D, and your implant is designed by a dedicated team of Symbios engineers

Step 3 – Mr Sadiq reviews and approves the surgical plan

Step 4 – Your unique INDIVIDUAL Hip® implant is manufactured

Step 5 – Your new hip is delivered to the hospital in time for surgery

As with the ORIGIN® Knee, this individualised design-and-manufacture process adds several weeks of lead time ahead of your surgery date.

The implant components

Only the femoral stem is manufactured specifically for you; the remaining components are the same proven materials used in standard hip replacement.

Patient-matched femoral stem – Titanium

Acetabular cup – Titanium

Cup insert – Ceramic or Polyethylene

Femoral head – Ceramic or Cobalt-chrome

Advantages

  • Aims to restore your natural hip offset and biomechanics
  • Designed to improve implant fit compared with a standard, off-the-shelf stem

Considerations

  • Requires a pre-operative CT scan; design and manufacture follows a 6-week timeline, so surgery dates need to be planned in advance
  • Not necessary for every patient; Mr Sadiq will advise whether a patient-matched or standard hip implant best suits your anatomy

Is a custom hip right for you?

Not every patient requires a custom implant. Mr Sadiq will assess your anatomy and discuss whether the INDIVIDUAL Hip® is the right option for you as part of your consultation.
