DAA Hip Replacement

DAA Hip Replacement: Hip Surgeon in Hobart

Total hip replacement is one of the most successful procedures in medicine, relieving the pain of hip osteoarthritis and restoring mobility. Mr Shalinder Sadiq performs hip replacement using the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA), a less invasive technique that replaces the hip from the front of the joint, through a natural interval between muscles.

How it's different

Unlike traditional approaches that go through or detach muscle at the side or back of the hip, DAA works through a natural gap between muscles, leaving the important gluteal muscles at the side and back of the hip undisturbed.

Advantages

  • Works through natural muscle planes rather than detaching muscle from bone
  • Usually a quicker short-term recovery
  • No hip movement restrictions during early recovery, unlike the posterior approach’s 6–8 week precaution
  • Often a quicker return to driving, typically 1–2 weeks after surgery
The main focus of any hip replacement, DAA included, is always the long-term outcome: a stable, well-positioned, well-functioning hip.

What to expect

Most patients walk on the day of surgery, under the guidance of a physiotherapist. The typical hospital stay is two to four days. Many patients don't need formal inpatient rehabilitation, published studies show no difference in outcomes between inpatient and outpatient rehab, and most people recover well at home with outpatient physiotherapy and a home exercise program. Inpatient rehab remains a good option if home circumstances aren't ideal or extra medical support is needed.
RECOVERY

After your operation

Good recovery starts in hospital and continues well after you go home. Mr Sadiq and his team will guide you through physiotherapy and follow-up care at the following milestones:
Rooms review
2–3 weeks after surgery
Follow-up
6 weeks after surgery
Ongoing review
Every 12 months

Mr Sadiq uses sub-dermal (dissolvable) sutures placed below the skin, so in most cases there’s nothing to remove; occasionally skin sutures or staples are used instead, and if so, he’ll organise their removal at your Rooms review. See our Recovery page for more on preparing your home and what to expect after discharge, or call us on 03 6279 5798.

Is DAA right for you?

Mr Sadiq will discuss every option with you and recommend joint replacement only when it's the right choice for your circumstances, and, where hip replacement is appropriate, whether the Direct Anterior Approach suits your anatomy.

If you’d prefer a hip implant designed and manufactured to match your own anatomy rather than a standard component, see our Custom Hip Replacement page.
